Our curriculum will be based on Common Core State Standards emphasizing critical thinking and interpretation skills. Students will be exposed to various age-appropriate pieces of literature. The writing process and compilation of a student portfolio will be a particular focus. In addition, study skills and standardized test preparation will be addressed. Grammar and spelling skills will be incorporated through literature from our text. Daily reading will be a requirement.
Math
Each student will be expected to develop accuracy in using basic concepts, computation and problem solving skills. In addition, students will have access to the online text and reinforcement materials. Students will understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. Students will apply and extend prior understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions and further extend their understanding of rational numbers, especially negative integers. Students will reason about order and absolute value of rational numbers and the location of points on all four quadrants of a coordinate plane. Students understand the use of variables in mathematical expressions. Students will use real world situations to aid in developing their ability to think statistically. Students will find area, surface area and volume of a variety of polygons. Emphasis will be given to developing the student’s mathematical vocabulary
