Students in Grade Five receive instruction in Religion, ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies.
Grade 5 is a departmential grade which means students switch classes.
The following are the summaries of the curriculum covered in each of these subject areas.
Religion-Students will participate in daily prayer and reflection. They will study Jesus’ mission, the New Testament, the liturgical year, church tradition, the Mass, the seven sacraments, and feast days which honor Our Blessed Mother and saints. Classroom activities will help to reflect Jesus’ mission and promote positive spiritual, social and emotional growth for our students. Community service involvement at local, national and international levels will be emphasized.
English Language Arts-English Language Arts is the integration of reading, writing, speaking and listening. In Reading students will have the opportunity to choose their own reading materials, with the guidance of the teacher and librarian, and use the Storytown Series. They will focus on text complexity and growth of Comprehension. In Writing the focus will be on text types, responding to reading, and research. Speaking and Listening will focus on communication and collaboration. The focus of Grammar will be on conventions, effective use, and vocabulary.
Math-The students will build from a sound foundation in basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. Students will develop fluency in operations and algebraic thinking through writing and interpreting numerical expressions and analyzing patterns and relationships. Students will understand place value and perform operations with whole numbers and decimals. Students will apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division of fractions. Students will develop an understanding of geometric measurements as it relates to volume and two dimensional figures. Using real world and mathematical problems, students will interpret and graph data points on all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Emphasis will be given to developing the student’s mathematical vocabulary.
Science
Social Studies-The study of the Western Hemisphere will include the presentation of the culture, physical geography, climate, vegetation, and natural resources of North and South America in a regional format. Map skills, concepts, and applications will play a large role in this curriculum area.
